Welcome
to my updated build site (like the car - still under construction!).
Here I hope to be able share the trials and tribulations of
building a replica GT40 Mk.II to the same specifications as the famous
black and silver winner of the 1966 Le Mans 24 hours race, the 1st time
that the now iconic car became "The
Ford That Beat Ferrari".
Why
this car and livery? It is not so much the fact that car did what it
did, but one of its drivers that drew me to this particular
specification. The car was crewed by a pair of New Zealand drivers,
Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon; the former of which had only just formed
the now famous and multi championship winning Formula 1 race team; as a
life long fan of the team my attraction to this car in particular I hope
is obvious.
Why
this way of building? As some of you already know I started building a
space frame replica from MDA
a couple of years ago; recently (late 2008) a new company came to my
attention (Mirage Automotive of Poole, Dorset, UK)
that was building exact monococque replicas of the GT40 using the same
materials and design as the originals. After visiting them I took the
decision to move my project to their product. Although this meant
changing a huge portion of the build, most of the original GT40
components I had already gathered could be transferred straight over
(and this actually accounted for the lion's share of the cost up to that
point).
I
hope you enjoy following
the build as it continues to evolve.
All
the very best
